When he received a draft notice during the Vietnam War, he joined the California National Guard. He then served in the 160th Infantry Regiment of the California Army National Guard, between 1967 and 1973.

Selleck has spoken about his time in the military proudly: “I am a veteran, I’m proud of it. I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era.
