From the Field to the Red Carpet: Hollywood’s Former Jocks and Cheerleaders

Jessica Simpson

Okay, so if there’s another obvious former cheerleader, it’s gotta be Jessica Simpson, who doesn’t surprise anyone by the fact that she was one cheering on the high school football team. Simpson is the daughter of a Baptist minister and a psychologist who got her first feel of performing when she would sing at the local church.

As an eighth-grader, Simpson was a cheerleader at Richardson North Junior High School in Dallas’ suburbs. That was the time she unsuccessfully auditioned for The Mickey Mouse Club. Apparently, she froze up during the tryouts. The next year, her cover versions of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” and “Amazing Grace” that she sang at a church camp got the attention of a gospel music record label. Simpson ended up dropping out of J.J. Pearce High School to embark on a singing and acting career.
