Atkins Diet

Created by American cardiologist Dr. Robert Atkins in the early 1970s, the Atkins Diet is a low-carbohydrate diet that focuses on controlling the levels of insulin in the body. Meal plans can be based on foods such as meat, fatty fish and seafood, high-fiber and low-carb vegetables, eggs, nuts and seeds, full-fat dairy and healthy fats. Avoiding foods such as grains, sugar, vegetable oils, and trans fats are recommended.

Although the Atkins Diet can be effective for weight loss, this nutritional approach is not particularly well balanced, as eliminating health professionals do not recommend a food group. It is, therefore, advised that a doctor is consulted before the commencement of the Atkins Diet. Dr. Atkins maintains that the expected weight loss within the first two weeks is 6lb to 10lb, falling from 1lb to 3lb in the long term.
