Biomimicry: Learning How to Design by Taking Inspiration From Nature

Biomimicry: the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modeled on biological entities and processes. Designers have a lot to learn from the natural world. And those lessons can come from various sources.

In 1989, Japan’s Shinkansen Bullet Train had a problem. It was really fast and every time it exited a tunnel, it created a loud sonic boom that unsettled the surrounding residential neighborhoods. So an engineering team was brought in to design a quieter, faster and more efficient train. How did they do it? Well, the general manager was a birdwatcher. This video is a story of how biomimicry is reshaping the world of design.
